GPs enabled to directly order cancer diagnostic tests for patients.

A new scheme launched by NHS England means that GPs are now able to directly arrange scans, ultrasounds or MRIs for people with worrying symptoms.

Patients may no longer need to visit a specialist before being able to access the tests, according to the plans announced on 16 November.

The Direct Access scheme will benefit patients whose symptoms aren’t serious enough to qualify for an urgent cancer referral but are still concerning enough that a GP believes they should be tested quickly.
