Join SCAS Online Talk: Tackling Health Inequalities in Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest

South Central Ambulance Services (SCAS), invites you to an important online public talk on Monday, 4 March, at 7pm to discuss Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA): Addressing Health Inequalities and Saving Lives.

Every year, around 80,000 people in the UK experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA)—a life-threatening emergency where the heart suddenly stops beating. Survival depends on immediate intervention with CPR and defibrillation, yet fewer than one in ten people survive an OHCA.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The critical role of CPR and defibrillation in saving lives.

  • How health inequalities—such as socio-economic background, ethnicity, and cultural factors—impact survival rates.

  • What national and regional initiatives are being implemented to address these disparities and improve survival outcomes.

Meet the Experts:

  • Liam Sagi, National Strategic Lead for Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest at the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE), will discuss the link between OHCA and health inequalities, and how these disparities can be addressed at a national level.

  • Duncan Robertson, Chief Paramedic at South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS), will share SCAS’s efforts to strengthen the “chain of survival” through promoting basic lifesaving skills, defibrillator awareness, and community engagement.

This session will also include a 10-minute interactive CPR demonstration—giving you the opportunity to learn a skill that could help save a life.

How to Join: Register by emailing membership@scas.nhs.uk to secure your place.

Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA), and discover how you can work together to improve survival rates and tackle health inequalities.
