What You Need to Know:

General Practice Nurses across England have begun delivering the spring COVID-19 booster as part of the NHS's seasonal vaccination programme. Since the national booking system opened last week, over half a million people have already secured their appointments—marking a strong start to the campaign.

At Healthwatch West Berks, we know how important it is to stay protected, especially if you're more vulnerable to serious illness. That’s why we’re helping to spread the word about this vital programme.

Who can get the spring COVID-19 booster?

The vaccine is being offered to:

  • People aged 75 and over (including those turning 75 by 17 June 2025)

  • Older adult care home residents

  • Individuals aged six months and over who have a weakened immune system

This spring, around 7.5 million people in England will be invited to come forward for their jab. Appointments are available at GP practices and pharmacies, and some walk-in clinics are open too.

Why this matters

COVID-19 hasn’t gone away—and for some people, it still poses a serious risk. The latest NHS data shows that more than 1,000 people are being treated in hospital every day due to COVID-19.

Research from the UK Health Security Agency shows that people who had a spring booster last year were more than 40% less likely to be admitted to hospital within two months of their vaccination. That’s a clear reminder of the protection the vaccine offers.

A message from NHS leaders

Professor Sir Stephen Powis, NHS England’s National Medical Director, reminds us:

“It is important we remember COVID-19 is not just a winter illness... It remains dangerous for those most at risk, such as older adults, care home residents and those who are immunosuppressed.”

Ashley Dalton, Minister for Public Health and Prevention, added:

“It is crucial we continue to protect the most vulnerable from COVID-19… with thousands of sites open across the country, including local pharmacies and GP practices.”

When does the spring campaign run?

The programme runs from 1 April to 17 June 2025, so if you're eligible, it’s best to book early.
