Winter Fuel and Pension Credit Information Sessions

West Berkshire Council is hosting drop-in sessions at local libraries to help residents determine if they qualify for pension credit benefits, which may include winter fuel payments.

In West Berkshire alone, approximately 600 pensioners may still be eligible for pension credit but have not yet applied.

With the colder months approaching, the importance of heating support cannot be overstated, especially for older adults who face increased health risks from living in cold homes. Low temperatures are linked to higher rates of respiratory illnesses, increased blood pressure, and even elevated risks of heart attacks and strokes.

Due to recent Government changes, around 10 million pensioners may lose their winter fuel payments, potentially leaving many vulnerable to cold-related health issues.

Pension credit is separate from the State Pension, averaging over £3,900 per year, and could be the extra financial support needed to maintain a warm home and reduce health risks during the winter months.

The first drop-in advice session will be held at Newbury Library on Tuesday, 19 November, from 10 am to 12 pm. Representatives from the Council’s Revenue and Benefits and Community Engagement teams, Age UK, and the Berkshire Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) will be on hand to help. Additionally, a Libraries Digital Services Officer will provide one-on-one support for those who need help with online applications.

To find out more about Pension Credit and check eligibility online, visit the UK Government’s Pension Credit page. For more information on how cold weather impacts health and what assistance is available, see the NHS guide to winter health.

If you or someone you know is 66 or over, please consider attending or sharing these sessions. Accessing this support could not only help with living costs but also protect against the serious health risks of living in a cold home this winter.
